Nobody wants a free thinker, people are uncomfortable with new ideals and choices. Long as things stay the same and people are complacent nothing will advance.
True that the "majority" of the public are uncomfortable with new ideals and choices, just as they are unconfortable with the sun so they put on sunscreen for protection, they will run and hide from unconfortable decisions and choices.
And I agree with what you said about complacency. But things never stay the same. They will either get better, progressively better through non-complacency and change, or, as you say through complacency -worse, or progressively worse.
